Resolution ResAP (2004)1 replaces resolution AP (96) 5 on coatings intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Varnish means the finished material prepared essentially from organic materials applied in the form of a continuous film to a substrate so as to form a protective layer and/or functional barrier between the food and the substrate. This resolution applies to varnishes which, in their finished state, are intended to come into contact with foodstuffs and which are of the following types:

  • varnishes for metal packaging,
  • varnishes for flexible packaging,
  • ultra-resistant varnishes.

This resolution sets out the conditions that varnishes intended to come into contact with foodstuffs should meet.
