Polymerization aids (technological coadjuvants) are substances which, together with additives (whose purpose is essentially to produce a technical effect) as well as monomers and starting substances, are necessary for the synthesis of plastic materials and articles.

Polymerization aids can be classified into two groups:

  • substances that directly introduce and influence polymer formation;
  • substances used to achieve the conditions enabling polymerization.

This resolution concerns only the first category of polymerization aids. It complements Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 with regard to polymerization aids. Indeed, this regulation does not include polymerization aids in the list of authorized substances even though these substances must undergo a risk assessment to be used in the manufacture of plastics intended to come into contact with food.

This resolution only concerns the first category of polymerization aids.
