Migration testing of adhesives for food contact materials (May 10, 2023)

The 2016 versionof the guide, revised in 2023, presents guidelines for compliance testing of adhesives used in food contact materials. Packaging generally contains less than 5% adhesive. Moreover, in most applications, the adhesive is not expected to come into direct contact with foodstuffs. Depending on the adhesive and the application, contact may occur accidentally at seams and edges, or by migration through the packaging or gas phase due to the presence of volatile compounds (vapor phase transfer). Thus, the specific migration of individual compounds is of greater interest than overall migration.
