On April 9, 2019, the industry association "Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI)" announced the launch of its revised guide to ensure the safety and compliance of food contact materials and articles (FCM) made from paper and board.

The revised document was first published in 2010 and updated in 2012. It explains how to comply with the highest safety standards applicable to paper and board used in food contact applications, helping to fill the gaps in the absence of specific European legislation.

Practical recommendations are provided on product design and material selection, good manufacturing practice, risk management, traceability and labeling, as well as testing methods and supply chain communication. Particular attention is also paid to the use of recycled paper in food applications.

The updated guide should boost the confidence of public authorities, economic operators and consumers in the safety of paper and board materials intended for food contact.
