On December 19, 2025, the European Commission published a study dedicated to the sustainability of food contact materials (FCMs). The aim of this work is to examine how sustainability considerations could be integrated into European legislation on FCMs, which has hitherto focused on food safety. The report establishes a definition of sustainability applicable to the sector, analyzes the environmental impacts of FCM, assesses the existing regulatory framework and identifies measures that could be considered as part of a possible legislative revision.
