In the absence of a specific regulatory text, the DGCCRF has drawn up sheets for different types of materials, intended primarily for official control departments and laboratories. These sheets specify the criteria and procedures for verifying the suitability of these materials for food contact, and more specifically the procedures for verifying the inertness principle of Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of October 27, 2004.

.

These sheets are the subject of upstream consultation with representatives of stakeholders (laboratories competent in the field of materials in contact with foodstuffs, manufacturers and processors of materials, food industries, distributors...).

Their publication on the DGCCRF website makes it possible to inform operators, in complete transparency, about certain criteria and procedures that will be used by its services in the context of official controls.

This specific sheet concerns materials and objects made of metals and alloys intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, within the meaning of Regulation (EC) no. 1935/2004 of October 27, 2004. The metals and alloys concerned are:

  • uncoated stainless steels;
  • metallic-coated stainless steels;
  • aluminum or aluminum alloys with organic coating;
  • uncoated steels (black iron);
  • tin-coated steels;
  • organically coated steels (tinplate, blackplate and chromium-plated iron) ;
  • unalloyed cast irons (alloy of iron and carbon with carbon content between 2.1 and 6.7%) uncoated or coated with a metallic coating ;
  • unalloyed cast iron (alloy of iron and carbon with carbon content between 2.1 and 6.7%) with organic coating with or without intermediate coating (metal or enamel);
  • tin or tin alloys;
  • zinc or zinc alloys;
  • other metals and alloys with metallic coating (bleached metal).

It does not concern enamelled materials, those with an inorganic coating or an organo-mineral hybrid coating such as "solgel" coatings.

This specific data sheet sets Specific Release Limits for metallic elements in metals and alloys, as well as for impurities. Analytical conditions are proposed for analyzing the release of metallic elements or the migration of organic substances from coatings.
