Resolution ResAP(2004)5 replaces resolution AP (99)3 on silicones intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Silicones are a group of chemical substances and polymeric preparations all containing polysiloxanes. Polysiloxanes are characterized by Si-O-Si and Si-C bonds. They are prepared from chlorosilanes undergoing hydrolysis. Polysiloxanes such as sealants, emulsifiers, solvents, etc., also fall within this definition. In addition, copolymers or mixtures of polysiloxanes with organic polymers are included in the term "silicones", provided that the siloxane monomer units predominate by weight over each of the other monomer units present. Silicones used as food additives are not included in the definition. This resolution describes the provisions that should be met by silicones used to come into contact with food.
