Decree no. 73-138 of 12/02/1973 stipulates that it is forbidden to use, in food industries and shops, materials or objects intended to come into contact with foodstuffs whose cleanliness has not been ensured" (article 10).

This decree defines the requirements for procedures and products for cleaning materials and objects. In particular it prohibits the use of certain products. "Processes for sanitizing materials or objects intended to be brought into contact with foodstuffs that use radiation other than ionizing radiation are subject to prohibition measures or special requirements for reasons of hygiene and health laid down in decrees. Those who use ionizing radiation are subject to the provisions of the regulations in force" (article 12).

































The productsand processes (ionizing treatment in the packaging, treatments by radiation other than ionizing in the packaging) are authorized by interministerial decrees, after consultation with the Conseil supérieur d'hygiène publique de France.
