This directive is a specific directive provided for in Regulation No. 1935/2004 of October 27, 2004 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.

This directive concerns the possible release of lead and cadmium from ceramic articles which, in their finished state, are intended to come into contact or are brought into contact, in accordance with their intended purpose, with foodstuffs.

This directive lays down the maximum permitted quantities of lead and cadmium, and describes the basic rules and analytical methods for determining lead and cadmium transfer.

This directive describes the procedures for amending and applying the directive.

This directive is amended by directive 2005/31/EC of April 29, 2005.

Amendments

Directive n°2005/31/EC amends directive n°84/500/EEC, in line with the provisions set out in EC regulation n°1935/2004, by adding article 2bis. This article specifies the obligation to accompany the materials and articles concerned with a written declaration attesting to their compliance with the rules applicable to them. These attestations must be issued by manufacturers or sellers on the European Union market, and must indicate the results of analyses and the contact details of the laboratories that carried them out.
