JRC Technical Reports, Practical guidelines on the application of migration modelling for the estimation of specific migration (December 2015)

In December 2015, the European Joint Research Centre JRC (Joint Research Centre) published a new guide on estimating and modeling the specific migration of substances present in materials and articles that are intended to come into contact with food. This new guide replaces the previous version published in 2010 based on Directive (EU) 2002/72/EC. Unlike the previous version, this new version allows the use of migration models to estimate the specific migration of multi-layer plastic materials. The decision tree available in this version has therefore been modified to take multi-layer plastic materials into account. This new version is globally composed of the following parts:

• Concept of migration modeling;
• Estimation of diffusion and partition coefficients (for single- and multi-layer materials) as well as estimation of specific parameters for different plastic polymers;
• Input data and application procedures;
• Optimization of conformity control.
