Presentation

This guide is part of a series of documents intended to provide guidance on the application of Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food (Plastics Regulation). This series of documents includes guidance on general aspects, guidance on migration testing (in preparation), guidance on migration modelling ("Applicability of generally recognised diffusion models for the estimation of specific migration in support of Directive 2002/72/EC") and guidance on information in the supply chain ("Union Guidance on Regulation (EU) n° 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food as regards information in the supply chain").

The guidance on the general aspects of the "Plastics Regulation" is structured in the same way as the regulation itself. In particular, it contains:

  • explanations on what is covered by the "Plastics Regulations" and what is not;
  • definitions of relevant terms in the context of food-contact materials and articles;
  • categories of functional additives and polymer production aids;
  • explanations on substances included in the Union list;
  • explanations on the reasons why substances are exempted from inclusion in the Union list and the applicable provisions concerning them;
  • the status of biocides for plastic materials and articles in contact with food;
  • explanations on dual-use additives and an indicative list of dual-use additives;
  • explanations on transitional provisions.
